Not sure which metal would be perfect for your special piece? We're here to help! Check out our comprehensive guide for choosing the best wedding ring metals for your lifestyle and aesthetic. We also have some tips how to take care of your wedding rings so they stay beautiful... for a lifetime.
We’re not gonna lie, we are Gold Girls here at Emily Amey Jewelry. We love the sumptuous warmth of yellow gold, the timeless steely sheen of white gold and platinum and the femininity of rose gold has made it a modern-day classic. We love them together, as seen in our mixed metal pieces, and we love them on their own. Each tone is suitable for a lifetime of everyday wear— the perfect choice is up to you!
We want to help create the ring of her.. or your dreams! When diving into the design process, we will ask what your metal preference is during our initial information gathering session. All wedding rings at Emily Amey Jewelry come in yellow, white or rose gold, and we can certainly create something in platinum as well. These are the metals you’ll most likely want your ring to me made of for durability and standing up to a lifetime of wear.
When thinking about metal choice for your wedding ring, we encourage you to consider a few factors. Not only do we want you to be in love with the color and finish, we want to make sure we create something durable enough to stand the test of time. You may love the intense yellow of 20k gold, but this softer option might not be best suited for your weekend rock climbing expeditions! We would suggest 14k gold or platinum, the most durable options- if you live a very active day to day life.
We proudly use 100% recycled metal in each and every Emily Amey Jewelry piece.
Platinum is a rare precious metal that is extremely durable which makes it the perfect choice for long-lasting jewelry. Because it is considered a real white metal, the beautiful white-silver color will not fade after years of wear. It is typical of Platinum to scratch easily, and this adds to the overall aesthetic of the soft satin glow -also known as patina. Platinum is a pure metal, therefore making it hypoallergenic. Although it does cost more than gold it is well worth it for its strength and resilience through everyday wear and an ideal choice for jewelry that will last a lifetime.
Gold is the only metal that is naturally yellow or “golden” in color. It is a rich, lustrous, metal that is the most traditional and therefore predomintaly chosen for our engagement and wedding bands. Pure elemental gold is 24 karats. Due to its extreme malleability nature, it is typically alloyed with other metals to give it strength. 18 karats is 75% pure gold, 14 karats is 58.5% pure gold and 10 karats is 41.7% pure gold. We find the 14ky allows for the perfect combination of golden hue and durability that works best so your piece will last longer and be less prone to damage while still maintaining a gorgeous, radiant appearance. Our main focus is creating a beautiful work of art while still preserving the durability, coloring, and affordability. That being said, we are willing to work with a higher karat gold upon request!
If you love the look and color of platinum, but are searching for a more affordable option, white gold may be the perfect choice for you! Most often pure gold is alloyed with either palladium or nickel, to give it a gorgeous silver-white hue. We offer options in natural while gold as well as rhodium plated. The natural white will have a more soft yellowish white gold hue, whereas the rhodium plated will be a brighter white color. Over time, the rhodium will have to be reapplied to keep its vibrant white color. This is an extremely popular choice for jewelry, engagement and wedding bands, as the white color metal complements diamonds beautifully while maintaining strength and durability for frequent wear.
Emily Amey White Gold and Rose Gold Engagement Rings
Rose gold is becoming a more increasingly popular option for jewelry. Rose gold is typically alloyed with pure gold and predominantly copper. The blend of copper produces a dreamy and glamorous pink hue that is exemplary for any engagement or wedding band, and perfect for those seeking a soft, romantic, and vintage look. 14k will have the most pinkish rose color to it due to the percentage of copper alloy mixed in. The addition of copper also makes rose gold the most durable gold option, so it is highly recommended particularly for those who work with their hands and are seeking a ring with longevity that will withstand everyday weathering, while also maintaining proper ring care.
Like gold, silver is a precious metal, and it is also malleable. Though not as hard as gold, it can be alloyed with other metals to increase its hardness, but it will always remain softer than gold.
Since sterling silver is quite soft, casters add copper to fin silver silver to hardens it and make it more durable without affecting the silver’s color. However, the addition of copper also makes it prone to tarnishing over time, particularly in humid conditions. Silver has long been sought after for its bright, shiny luster, but it can also be oxidized to give it a dark gray patinated appearance.
We love working with gold and always recommend it due to it's durability. All gold will sustain its color regardless if it is yellow gold, rose gold or natural white gold.
At Emily Amey Jewelry, we don't typically rhodium plate our white gold, but Some jewelers enhance the brilliance of white gold by applying a thin rhodium plating to a piece. Since the rhodium is an application to the metal, it has a tendency to wear off after time and will need to be reapplied.
The higher the karat of a metal, the softer it is and more likely it is to scratch. Keep in mind all metal scratches over time and creates a wonderfully soft patina.
